The following lesson plan, produced during the National Endowment for Humanities Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshop – Forge of Innovation: The Springfield Armory and the Genesis of American Industry, in the summer of 2015, asks students to explore the Northampton Association of Education and Industry (NAEI), a utopian community established in Northampton, Massachusetts.
Students will examine the NAEI constitution, form arguments about whether or not they agree or disagree with their solution a variety of societal problems including gender, industry, education, and religious and community values, and defend their opinions in written form. Throughout the process, students will make connections between their own values and those of the NAEI both in the context of the mid 1800s as well as today.
The lesson plan includes objectives, coordinating frameworks, detailed lesson activities in addition to primary source documents, graphic organizers, and grading rubrics for the writing activities.
