Both recipients remarked that the awards represent something special about the schools in which they teach and that their goals include creating communities in which all students are accepted and can achieve success.
Kelley Brown has been working with the Teaching American History program as a teacher-leader for the past six years, in addition to working with the Collaborative’s Division of Youth Services teachers as a professional development facilitator. Laurie Risler participated in Emerging America programs for several years before joining the program as a teacher-leader last summer. In addition to leading Teaching American History programs, Kelley and Laurie are both presenters in Emerging America’s Teaching with Primary Sources program, supported with a grant from the Library of Congress.
