World War I and Disability

Wounded soldiers from World War I
Year Start
1914
 -
Year End
1919

The lesson invites students to think about what life was like as a disabled veteran of WWI and to connect to background knowledge as well as personal experiences. The teacher will provide historical information and guide the class in a read-aloud from the perspective of a soldier wounded and recuperating in Italy from Ernest Hemingway’s “In Another Country.”

The lesson provides materials and instructions for guiding students in analysis of primary source materials that include a song about shell shock, a cartoon contrasting wounded veterans with rich profiteers, Red Cross posters, and a photograph highlighting life-changing war injuries. Students will choose a homework project from options that include individual writing, group writing, group skit, or individual design of a poster.

The lesson includes a Universal Design for Learning chart and graphic organizers, and is aligned with U.S. History II Learning Standards.
