Authentic Historical Writing: Inspiring Students with Experiential Learning & Primary Sources
Work alongside the Western Massachusetts Writing Project at the Springfield Armory Historic Site!
Participants will gain strategies to stimulate narrative writing based on experiential learning, service learning, place-based learning, interactive field trips, speakers in the classroom, and in-depth work with primary sources. Educators will find new ways to access student interest in the issues and activities that interest them the most and link community-based resources with academic thinking and writing. Meeting dates include October 20, November 3, December 8, 4-7:15PM.

Explore the Spanish Civil War, a pivotal event in Spanish- and World- History and Culture! Educators will explore parallels to today including Syria, Ukraine, and the rise of rightwing populism. Presenters include Kelly Brown (Easthampton H.S.), Peter Carroll (Stanford University), and Sebastiaan Faber (Oberlin College). Meeting dates are October 29, 8AM-4PM at the Collaborative for Educational Services in Northampton, Massachusetts.
Accessing Inquiry for Students with Disabilities through Primary Sources

Arising from a decade of work by history educators, historians, Special Education experts, and on research and classroom practices that support ALL learners, educators will explore how to make materials such as primary source documents and analysis tools available to students with disabilities and diverse learning styles. Meeting dates include October 25, 8AM-4PM, November 10, 8AM-4PM, and December 20, 4-6PM.
